It may be worth checking that old jar full of coins you have sitting around. An old 5-franc coin, dating from 1928, has sold at auction for CHF 30,000.
There were a few things that made this coin particularly valuable, although it looks very similar to the coins we have today, it is slightly larger – and the auctioneer says it is in very good condition, which contributed to its value.
But the coin we know today was minted from 1931 onwards, and theoretically many old coins can still be in circulation.
But they’re unlikely to bring as much – even so, a 5 franc coin minted before World War II could still be worth around 30 francs.
