A reaction to the speech by US Vice-President, JD Vance, is putting the Swiss president, Karin Keller Sutter, under pressure.
At a conference in Munich, JD Vance shocked the audience by roundly attacking traditional allies of the US saying freedoms and democracy were under threat in Europe.
It was met with a stunned silence in the hall.
But the Swiss president told the press that it was a ‘very liberal speech, in a very Swiss sense when he says we should listen to the population.’
But the Greens are shocked by the response. They called Vance’s speech anti-European and anti-rule of law. They say Keller-Sutter’s reply isolates Switzerland from its main partner, the EU.
