The Federal Council remains cautious, saying potential cost savings appear limited.
But, it sees more promise in so-called “return hubs” for rejected asylum seekers awaiting deportation, particularly if developed in cooperation with other countries.
The issue has gained traction in Switzerland after similar debates across Europe.
