Autoroute closed permanently

For the first time ever, an autoroute is to be closed - and downgraded to an ordinary road.

The A50 near Glattfelden only runs for 4km and was intended to be a link from Basel to Winterthur. But the money for the rest ran out in the eighties, leaving just one rarely used section.

Canton Zurich decided it should be recategorised into a cantonal road. It’s the first time Switzerland’s autoroute network has shrunk.
