Bad glacier news

It’s been another bad year for the glaciers. Low snowfall and warmer temperatures mean it’s likely there’ll be another record loss of the ice.

Glaciologist Matthias Huss told the Sonntags-Zeitung that in many areas it could be worse than last year.

Researchers took measurements on the Strahlhorn in Valais at 4,000 meters high. There was no snow on the ice at all. The new snow melted too fast before it could combine with the glacier.

The team has now given up on some glaciers, as they are too small or too dangerous due to crevasses or falling rocks.

Huss told the papers its now too late for the smaller glaciers – they can’t be saved.
