Tourist officials in the Bernese Oberland are furious at the American travel guide Fodor’s as they have listed the Jungfrau region as a no travel zone.
So, it’s on the same list as Mexico City, Mombasa and the Canary Islands.
The reason is over-tourism. The guide says it’s best if visitors avoid these regions as tourists are damaging the environment.
It claims the region is struggling to manage a tourist boom while protecting the natural surroundings.
But Marc Ungerer from the Jungfraujoch tourist office says they had just over a million visitors last year – far lower than many other destinations on the list – and it can’t be compared to mass tourist destinations, which are creating problems for the locals.
He goes on top say the opposite is true and points out the money tourists bring into the area is funding superb public transport – which benefits everyone.
