Biya demonstrations expected this weekend

Paul Biya

Demonstrations are expected this weekend on the Place des Nations by the Cameroonian diaspora in protest at the country’s autocratic president’s stay at the Hotel Intercontinental.

Paul Biya has run the country since 1982 and is accused of vote rigging and human rights abuses. At the age of 91, it’s thought he’s in Geneva for medical treatment.

Anti Biya demonstrations have a history of becoming violent in Geneva.

During his last visit in 2019 pro and anti-Biya sides clashed and a Swiss TV journalist had their equipment stolen by Biya’s bodyguards.

The canton complained about the Cameroonian delegation last time, saying they were treating the hotel and its surroundings as a state within a state.

International watchdogs believe Cameroon is the most corrupt country in the world.
