The government say the borders will be strengthened from now until September.
The Federal Council says the combined events of The Euro Football Championships due to be held in Germany shortly – then the Olympics in Paris – and the Ukrainian peace conference in canton Nidwalden are the reasons for the precautions.
Intelligence services say Islamic State has called for attacks against the sporting events – which could include fan zones. Checks on goods and people will be strengthened as well as patrols near the border zones.
Cooperation with international agencies will be increased during the major events and specialized police officers will be ready to be dispatched to either Germany or France.
