A petition has been launched to stop the World Cup fan zone in Geneva. It’s been led by the socialist city councillor, Pascal Holenweg.
It has 300 signatures so far.
Backers claim the fan zone legitimises the choice of holding the event in Qatar. Holenweg says the country has a reprehensible record on human rights and environmental protection.
If the Fan Zone does go ahead, there should be an effort to raise awareness of the human rights record in the gulf country, he says.
The zone organisers say that there were similar efforts to highlight some the issues in Russia during that tournament in 2018.
