Calls are growing for stricter rules on older drivers, following a rise in accidents involving senior citizens.
According to the Federal Roads Office, drivers over 70 were responsible for more than 5,500 accidents last year - a ten percent increase - with 28 fatalities. That compares to fewer accidents and deaths among younger drivers aged 18 to 24.
The debate has intensified after a fatal crash in Sedrun in canton Graubunden, where an 87-year-old driver drove into a school, killing a teacher and injuring several students.
Now, experts are calling for tighter controls. One proposal would require annual medical check-ups from age 80, instead of every two years.
