Road safety campaigners are demanding regulations be changed that currently allow 16-year-olds to ride a 125 cc motorcycle.
The law was changed 5 years ago to align with EU rules – before under 18s wouldn’t have been allowed to.
But driving instructors say those wishing to use a motorbike need better training. The head of L Drive, the umbrella organisation for instructors, says 16-year-olds simply need to be made aware of the dangers.
The figures show the number of accidents involving young riders are climbing.
But the Motor Cycles Importers Association say that’s due to the number of riders increasing. They point out the number of 125 cc bikes on the roads has doubled since the law change, at 60,000.
