Switzerland could be energy independent and carbon neutral by the year 2050, according to a study by the EPFL in Lausanne.
It could also be 30% cheaper.
But it would need a massive rise in solar and wind power. The figures assume 60% of roofs would have solar panels installed – which is described as a massive underexploited resource – and build more windfarms.
While the need to be carbon neutral is a commitment in law, it isn’t legally necessary to be energy independent.
