Cartigny loses pit appeal

Village of Cartigny (c) Albins

A long-running dispute in Geneva has reached its end: a new gravel pit will soon open in Cartigny.

After 15 years of legal wrangling, federal judges have thrown out the village’s last appeal.

The pit will extract almost 600,000 cubic meters of gravel, sand and clay — reducing Geneva’s dependence on imports and cutting transport emissions.

Cartigny warned of threats to farmland, but the court ruled Geneva still has more crop rotation land than required. And once operations end, the site will be restored for agriculture.

The gravel pit will be located between Chancy and Cartigny.
