CERN has announced it will have a new head from 2026.
It has chosen the British physicist Mark Thompson. He’s currently the head of the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council and holds the chair of particle physics at Cambridge University.
He’s very well known in Geneva as he’s spent most of his career at CERN.
The current CERN Director General, Fabiola Gianotti, says she has full confidence in Thompson as she’s worked with him for years.
Mark Thompson has time to get ready for his new role – he’ll take over on the 1st January 2026.
