The current cold weather could be very good news for Lake Geneva.
Environmental experts say the falling temperatures should mean a complete mixing of the water – something which hasn’t happened for the last 12 years.
Nicole Gallina from the International Commission for the Protection of the Waters for Lake Geneva, explained to the Tribune de Genève that the surface is normally warmer and lighter, but in the cold weather it will sink and mix – and provide more oxygen to the organisms that live on the lake floor.
The process is important for the lake health. While it doesn’t happen every year – the length of time since the last mixing - in 2012 – is a dubious record.
