Commune to pay thousands for a tree

The Geneva commune of Chêne-Bougeries is offering to pay residents if they plant trees on their land.

There are many houses in the commune with their own garden – one of the highest densities of such properties in the canton. 

Each owner could get CHF 3,000 a tree – up to a maximum of CHF 25,000 – if they have enough land. 

The local council wants to plant more than 1,000 new trees within the next ten years. 

There are conditions. 

Each tree must reach a height of at least 7 meters when fully grown. The sapling has to come from a local nursery and a new tree can’t take the place of one cut down. 

More than 90 residents have registered so far.
