Medical experts are calling to bring back compulsory mask wearing in public spaces.
The Ticino infectious disease expert, Andreas Cerny, says masks have proven to be effective and we should be careful not to overload the health system.
He points out Omicron is far more transmissible than earlier variants – although it is less deadly.
But politicians may be more reluctant to bring in more restrictive rules. Swiss People’s Party MP, Andreas Glarner, says such a move would be disproportionate, saying it’s not acceptable that everyone has to restrict themselves to protect a few.
A spokesman for the Cantonal Conference of Health Directors says the situation will be discussed at the next meeting on Thursday.
