Two demonstrations against the burka ban were triggered by the result last night.
One in Bern where 150 marched to the Federal Parliament building from the train station. Police followed the group, some in riot gear, but didn’t intervene.
The other in Zurich. Protestors gathered in Helvetiaplatz to protest the outcome. Again, police didn’t intervene. Both Zurich and Bern cantons rejected the ban.
The Justice Minister, Karin Keller-Sutter, says she wants the cantons to bring in laws that ban the burka – and not a federal law. She says that’s because the cantons have police sovereignty.
Many cantons have already signalled they don’t think it’s their job to bring in a federal law.
The vote means the law has to be adopted within the next two years.
