Divonne baths may never reopen

Divonne thermal baths

The thermal baths in the neighbouring French town of Divonne may never reopen, unless a private buyer can be found.

Two years ago, the local authority took control of the dilapidated spa – and spent EUR 2.5m on renovations.

It reopened to great fanfare in May last year – but problems remained, including unacceptably high levels of bacteria.

It was soon shut down again.

It costs local tax payers nearly a million euro a year just to have it laying dormant.

Now the town says it will close for good unless a private backer is prepared to invest the money to fix the problems. Five operators have expressed an interest in taking it over.
