**** APRIL FOOL**** A pod of freshwater dolphins could soon be making waves in Lake Geneva, in what officials are calling a “temporary and carefully managed relocation.”
The marine mammals currently reside at Aquaparc de Belle-Rivière, a French water park near Evian-les-Bains - but it’s slated for demolition later this spring.
With construction timelines tightening, French authorities have been searching for a suitable interim habitat - ultimately landing on the lake due to its size, controlled access points, and relatively stable water conditions.
Experts involved in the move say the northern section of the lake will be temporarily adapted with discreet containment systems, ensuring the dolphins remain in a monitored environment while minimizing disruption to other wildlife and lake users.
Locals will be able to watch the dolphins from the banks of the lake and are encouraged to donate beach balls for them to play with.
Dr Finneas Dorsel says it’s important to make sure they don’t get bored - he says they prefer blue balls.
