Drought forest fears

EPFZ professor Andreas Rigling says beech trees are already in survival mode in August. Rigling works at a research site near Zurich and warns that entire forests in the Jura have gone bare weeks ahead of autumn.

Federal drought data suggests that 2026 could beat 2018's record with more extremely dry weeks already than that whole benchmark year, and the dry season starting 2 weeks earlier.

Beech and spruce, both long dominant across the plateau are being pushed out by oak and other drought tolerant species
