Will easyJet soon be flying under Geneva’s flag?
According to reports in the Italian press, the Geneva-based Mediterranean Shipping Company - MSC - is exploring a possible stake or even a full takeover of the British budget airline.
The shipping giant, owned by billionaire Gianluigi Aponte, has denied any “direct investment,” but speculation has sent easyJet shares soaring more than ten percent.
Industry observers say such a move would make sense: MSC has been expanding rapidly, from ports and rail to air cargo, and taking over easyJet could link its cruise empire with its own passenger airline.
EasyJet, which is Switzerland’s largest carrier in Geneva and Basel, is valued at about EUR 4bn
For now, both companies remain silent - but investors seem convinced that a billion-euro deal could be taking shape.
