The EU says there’s been great progress in talks with Switzerland – but there remain two sticking points. The free movement of people and university fees.
Switzerland would like to be able to apply a brake to EU immigration in certain circumstances – but the EU remains united that there can no exceptions on single market rules – and that includes free movement.
Also, the EU says it wants EU university students to pay the same rates as Swiss students. Currently the 31,000 EU nationals enrolled at Swiss universities have to pay the higher overseas rates.
