Experts worry about new strains

Health experts are concerned about the rise of the new strains – despite the fall of infections generally – and the new possibly more dangerous Brazilian strain – has been detected in the country for the first time.

The South American strain is thought to be responsible for a wave of infections, and deaths, in Manaus. Initial research suggests even those who’d caught and recovered from the original virus caught the new strain – and many of those died.

The new strains have increased by 60% over the last week. Around 4,500 new cases have been detected. They’re thought to account now for almost 40% of all infections.
