Two years after ultra-spicy chips caused hospitalizations in Germany and panic in Swiss schools, whole Carolina Reaper chilies, which are among the world’s hottest, are now being sold online in Switzerland without age restrictions.
Some platforms market the 2.2-million-Scoville peppers like snacks, and influencers are promoting them to young audiences.
Consumer advocates warn the “extreme” branding targets thrill-seeking teens, while toxicologists note the chilies can trigger severe pain, abdominal cramps or even fainting, especially in children.
One seller now says it will introduce age checks, though not required by law.
