The federal government is considering allowing the forced Covid testing of failed asylum seekers.
Figures show there are around 50 people who have been denied asylum and can’t be returned to their own countries as they have to have a negative test.
The government wants an emergency law change which will allow the restraint of those to be deported so a test can be taken.
Initial responses from the cantons show a split in opinion, Fribourg says all asylum seekers should be given a vaccine instead. But canton Bern agrees with the proposal.
Human rights groups are opposed. Amnesty International says it’s ‘disproportionate’ and ‘discriminatory’ as it would only apply to asylum seekers.
