Swiss cantons remain divided over a federal proposal that would allow up to twelve new Sunday business openings each year.
The plan, pushed by Zurich, is backed “in principle” by Vaud, which says each canton should decide for itself but won’t yet commit to what it will do locally.
Geneva has also signalled support, while Neuchâtel, Lausanne and several unions oppose the change, arguing it won’t boost purchasing power and could harm workers and family life.
Supporters, including the Swiss Tourism Federation, say the measure would strengthen tourism, help shops compete, and bring extra business to restaurants and cultural venues already open on Sundays.
