Ferney shopping project binned

The developers of a large shopping centre project in Ferney Voltaire have pulled out, citing contractual problems.

The move will undoubtedly mean the large space that has already been cleared near the border post will remain empty for some time.

The mayor, Daniel Raphoz, is critical of the delay, saying the demolition of the garages and other businesses have cost hundreds of jobs.

Campaigners have long been fighting the plans, saying it’s old fashioned and goes against new environmental requirements.

The cancellation of this project echoes another which seems to have hit the buffers – the Open Centre in Saint-Genis.

That’s currently on hold after a court ruled the impact on local wildlife was too great.
