There are fewer fish being caught in Lake Geneva.
Last year 502 tonnes of fish were caught, down 8% from the year before.
It’s down to poor reproduction rates by different whitefish species, according to a cantonal biologist from the Valais Department of Fishing and Hunting.
There are thought to be several reasons. Less harsh winters, a lack of oxygen at deeper areas of the lake and the negative impact of the quagga mussel – which is an invasive species from rivers in eastern Europe.
Perch is the most caught fish – 241 tonnes last year, ten tonnes less than 2020.
