FIFA trial ends, possibly

The long running corruption case involving FIFA, the former head of the organisation, Sepp Blatter and former UEFA boss Michel Platini has come to an end – possibly.

A court in Muttenz in canton Basel Country has upheld an earlier ruling which acquitted the two defendants. 

The Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona had already acquitted them in 2022 – but the Federal Prosecutors’ Office appealed. 

The fraud allegation stems from a CHF 2m payment Blatter made to Platini 14 years ago. It’s alleged Blatter made the payment as he then needed votes for his re-election to run FIFA.

This second acquittal could be appealed once again to the Federal Supreme Court. While a final decision has not been made, correspondents believe it will be unlikely.
