The lower house of parliament, the National Council, has narrowly passed a motion to widen the A1 autoroute to six lanes between Geneva and Lausanne and Bern and Zurich.
Swiss People’s Party MP Erich Hess – who launched the debate – says the A1 is chronically overloaded.
But the Greens suggest the issue could be forced to a referendum. They say if you build more roads, then you get more traffic.
The Federal Council is in favour of the plan – the upper house, the Council of States, has yet to vote.
