The mayor of the bordering French town, Annemasse, says he’d like to see a residents of Grand Genève have a ‘cross border citizen card’.
Christian Dupessey says it will be an important symbol – but it would have a practical effect – such as holders having access to public services on both sides of the border.
He points out travel cards are already accepted on both sides – but the main sticking point is health. French residents do not have access to Swiss health services – except for emergencies.
There is an agreement in place for those needing dialysis.
The mayor admits money is the main issue as the French insurer is currently refusing to reimburse expensive Swiss treatment.
