Geneva bringing in strict waste laws

Geneva is to bring in the strictest waste sorting laws in the country.

In a vote on Friday evening, the Grand Council agreed – almost unanimously – to a series of new laws that will mean households will have to sort their waste more carefully, plastic takeout meal containers will be banned as will other single use plastic products. 

The environment minister, Antonio Hodgers, called the vote a ‘paradigm shift’.

There is also an aim that all waste will be treated in the canton to cut down on transportation. 

The new laws should be fully in force by the end of 2025.
