Despite voters agreeing to the move in March – some Geneva car owners are shocked at the new tax they will have to pay next year.
The way car tax is calculated changes – based on CO2 emissions.
This means owners of older cars are likely to be in a shock. One mini owner told the Tribune de Genève that the tax has doubled to over CHF 1,000.
But others are seeing an even steeper rise – from a few hundred to several thousand.
Some members of the Grand Council are surprised at the new calculations – saying their simulations before the change didn’t predict such strong rises. Another example was for a Ford Mustang – now the annual tax will be closer to ten thousand.
But about 62% of car owners will see a drop – especially those with an electric car.
