The issue of foreigners voting and standing in cantonal elections will go a vote itself in Geneva.
The initiative ‘A life here – A vote here’ proposes that anyone who’s lived in the canton for more than eight years will be able to vote cantonally and stand for election.
Campaigners say they have enough signatures to take the issue to the people.
Geneva already allows non-Swiss the right to vote in communal elections.
If the initiative passes – it will mean Geneva leading the way in foreigner rights. It would allow non-Swiss voting in cantonal and communal elections, and for non-Swiss candidates to stand for election.
