The Geneva Green party says the war in Ukraine has shown how important it is to reduce Switzerland’s dependence on foreign oil and gas and has put forward a plan to install solar panels on all roofs and appropriate surfaces in the canton within the next 15 years.
It’s estimated 1,400 giga watt hours could be produced a year under the plan – so far, it’s currently 60, barely 4% of the total potential, say the Greens.
The boost in solar power would also help the canton meet its carbon commitment – and ecologists say the cost of producing solar panels is coming down all the time.
The Greens have introduced a motion in parliament to push forward solar power. It also demands investment in battery storage facilities.
