Geneva’s famous nighttime waterfront may look spectacular to visitors, but conservationists warn the city’s bright lights are seriously disrupting wildlife.
Experts say artificial lighting around the lake, rivers and streets affects fish, bats, insects and plants by disturbing feeding habits and fragmenting habitats.
The canton has now introduced stricter lighting guidelines, requiring unnecessary lights to be switched off overnight and new projects to assess their environmental impact.
In Geneva, trials are already under way to dim lighting along the lakeside and protect vital dark corridors for wildlife movement.
