Geneva has a housing crisis and today the Tribune de Genève is backing calls to make it easier for elderly residents to move from their homes which are now too big for them to smaller premises – without paying more.
A recent survey by Raiffeisen bank highlighted the problem. The average person in their thirties lives in a space of 35m2 – while those in their eighties live in space almost twice as big.
Persuading the elderly to move to a smaller apartment would help alleviate the problem.
The paper points to a programme in Zurich which would calculate rent based on the number of people living in the space – so an elderly couple moving to a smaller flat are guaranteed to pay less.
If such a system was expanded across the country it would free up enough housing for 450,000 people, based on the bank’s survey.
