Geneva unveils new river

Geneva has a new river – or at least an old river that you can now see again.

As part of the new development around the Acacias area, the Drize River – which had been buried since the 1950s – is now flowing in the open air.

The ultimate goal is to re-naturalize the river banks which planners say will benefit the residents.

The flow of the river can be highly seasonal, in the summer, flow can be minimal – but the spring can see a surge in water.

The canton’s Water Office says the river will help cool the city and bring nature back.

New pedestrian and cycling paths along the banks are now being planned.
