The Gotthard Pass will reopen on Friday, which is earlier than planned.
The Federal Roads Office says the winter closure can be lifted thanks to light snowfall and rapid clearing and repair work on the mountain route.
The reopening will help ease pressure on the A2 autoroute during the busy Ascension and Whitsun travel weekends.
At the same time, the extended exit lane at Göschenen will also return to service, designed to reduce traffic diverting through local villages during peak congestion.
