Plans for a new tram line running from Nations, through Grand Saconnex and then ultimately crossing the border into Ferney-Voltaire has cleared a major hurdle after the residents of Saconnex have given the go ahead to cede the land needed.
Although the local council gave the go ahead a year ago – some residents launched a campaign against it, as it will mean the demolition of some homes and a massive felling of trees.
But those backing the plan, which includes the Green Party, point out the project promises to plant two trees for each one cut down and it will reduce road traffic through the commune.
Locals backed the new line with a majority of 51.5%.
