Heavy rain and strong winds are expected in many areas over the next few days.
Higher levels are expected to get a lot of snow – up to a meter and a half.
The worst hit areas are expected to be in the east, mainly cantons Graubünden and Uri. The government has issued weather alerts for those areas.
The conditions in western parts will likely to be reasonably moderate – although parts of canton Valais could get a lot of snow which will raise avalanche alerts.
But ski resorts are happy. Most slopes will be open over the holiday season – which in recent years has been unusual.
