Heavy snow still closes passes

Heavy snow is still affected the higher ground. The Furka and Susten passes remain closed. They would normally be open by now.

The Susten pass is usually the last one to be cleared as its mainly used by tourists – even so, it’s normally open by the beginning of June, but authorities don’t expect it to open now until the end of the month – and it could be later, according to canton Uri officials.

Meanwhile, heavy rain has triggered a landslide in Vitznau in canton Lucerne. Workers are trying to divert water away from the area by laying pipes to take the overflow to existing streams and rivers.

But the water level on Lake Constance has been downgraded from level 5, the highest, to 4 as the water starts to subside.
