The price of housing is concerning many experts as the low paid are being squeezed.
The latest figures from the Federal Office for Housing, the first report for two years, show the low paid are spending nearly half their income on rent.
On average, tenants pay about a third.
High rents are also causing problems for the middle classes as many feel they can’t afford better homes – and so don’t move, causing a blockage in the property chain.
Right-wing politicians say high immigration levels are to blame.
But others say it’s the supply side that’s the problem.
They highlight bureaucratic hurdles getting building permits and more housing cooperatives should be allowed.
