Canton Uri is asking the government if it can experiment with a reservation system for entering the Gotthard Tunnel.
The canton covers the northern entrance to the tunnel. During busy periods, motorists can wait for hours to get through.
It's suggesting that one of the two lanes be reserved only for those who have booked a time slot.
A similar system is already place for trucks.
The federal government needs to give its go-ahead – but it’s sceptical. It says it can’t think of the best way of implementing it.
