More and more bakeries are shutting down, and now discount giant Aldi is turning up the heat.
The discount retailer has slashed prices on its baked goods, declaring it now sells “the cheapest bread in Switzerland.”
Half-white and wholemeal loaves of 500 grams each now cost just 99 centimes - nearly 20 percent less than before.
Independent bakers are outraged. One owner in Uster, canton Zurich, told the Blick newspaper that the price devalues craftsmanship and can’t reflect fair pay.
Aldi insists its bread is mostly made in Switzerland. but traditional bakers warn that cheap, industrial bread may come at the cost of taste and authenticity.
