A team of divers in Lake Maggiore in canton Ticino have found a ship wreck that’s been undiscovered for almost 100 years – and they weren’t actually looking for it.
The passenger ship ‘Mercedes’ sank on July 8th 1928 when it collided with an Italian passenger boat off Brissago.
Seven passengers and one crew member were rescued, but the 22-year-old engineer died when he was dragged down with the wreck.
The team came across it down 270 meters and around a kilometre from the accident site. But they were actually looking for another ship which sank in a storm in the same area in 1896.
