Residents of the Geneva commune of Plan-les-Ouates are fighting back against moves by the Swiss People’s Party to close down a local asylum centre.
The right-wing party have launched a petition for its closure.
But 85 locals have written an open letter to the authorities and media which says the party is trying to frighten the population without reason.
It goes on to say they welcome those who are fleeing totalitarian regimes.
The head of the local Swiss People’s Party, Jean-Christophe Delfim, says the letter was driven by the Socialist Party and it won’t prevent them to continue to collect signatures until June 15th.
