The Mont-Blanc Tunnel will be closed for four months this year – and then the same for next year.
The tunnel is a major route to Italy and is used by 1,700 trucks and 3,600 cars every day – that number can double during August.
The tunnel owners say there’s too much work to do for one-off projects - and a long-term closure is necessary.
It’ll be the first time the tunnel has been closed for an extended period since it reopened in 2002 after a fire that killed 39 people three years earlier.
The closure will start at the beginning of September and will re-open just before Christmas. It will be closed again for the same period next year.
