Drivers heading south for the Easter holidays waited in 14 km queues for around 2 and a half hours to get through the Gotthard tunnel yesterday afternoon, and similar – if not worse - queues are expected today.
The TCS is advising holiday makers to look for alternative routes. The suggestion is those from the Zurich area to use San Bernadino tunnel once the lines for the Gotthard become more than a hour long.
Those from French speaking areas should use the Grand St Bernard tunnel into Italy – although there is a toll for that route.
The worst time today is expected to be between 3 and 9pm.
